touch to match
Teacher: Klaus Gasteier
A socially aware multi touch interface - the multi touch device as a virtual window
The task: The participants will try to conceptualize and develop “real”, conditional multi user interaction for a multi touch device (concepts & prototype). Use the multi touch functionality as a means for communication and socialisation, bridging interactions in real space and (via network) over distances: make it a true “social media” device.
Technical description:
For the concept "touch to match" to work we need 2 "ordinary" multi touch table configurations. In the centre of each table there should be a camera lens, filming the user, sending a "life size" image of the actual touching user(s) to the other (via network connected) table. And vice versa. The multi touch tables thus become see-through devices, "windows" (Best would be even a vertical solution). The transmitted video image has to be calibrated thouroughly with the as well transmitted (multi) touch coordinates of the user's fingers. The action takes place at the coordinates where the touch interactions from both sides meet in a given range.
What will happen (visually, conditionally, socially...) at those spots where "touch matches touch" is part of the conceptual and interaction designing task, later coding work of the participants.
